ABSTRACT

This study seeks to develop concrete strategies for a regional university to support the academic advancement of multicultural families, linking this to the ‘Social Innovation’ goal of the Regional Innovation System & Education(RISE) project. For this purpose, the study analyzed the results of a survey conducted by T University(Busan) in partnership with the Nam-gu Office, targeting 47 members of multicultural families. The findings revealed a high aspiration among multicultural family members to acquire a high school equivalency diploma(Geomjeong-gosi), primarily to support their children’s education. However, they recognized financial burdens, childcare problems, and insufficient Korean language skills as major barriers. Therefore, this study proposes a core strategy: T University, as a ‘Vocational/Lifelong Education-Centered’ institution, should open its campus resources and collaborate with local government bodies to provide customized Geomjeong-gosi programs. This presents a practical way for the university to fulfill its role as a regional hub for the RISE project and contribute to the social integration of multicultural families.
