ABSTRACT

This study examines how contact with Korea shapes identity and belonging among Nordic Korean adoptees. Based on in-depth interviews with three adoptees from Denmark and Norway, the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Four types of contact were identified: physical, relational, linguistic and cultural. Physical contact fostered connection through embodied familiarity while also highlighting outsiderhood. Relational contact-especially family reunion-had the strongest impact on identity transformation. Linguistic and cultural contact functioned as ongoing mediators of connection to Korea. Participants described their identities as boundary-crossing and hybrid between Korea and their adoptive countries. By typologizing adoptees’ contact experiences and linking them to identity reconstruction, this study contributes to research on intercountry adoptees and diaspora identity.
