AB - This study explores the meanings of volunteer experiences in relation to community adaptation and place attachment among international students residing in Busan. Using Giorgi's phenomenological method, in-depth interviews were conducted with six international students who had participated in volunteer activities in the local community.
The findings revealed five themes: expansion of social relationships, personal growth and identity transformation, recognition as community members, formation of place attachment to Busan, and strengthening of settlement intentions. Through volunteer activities, participants developed meaningful relationships with local residents and came to perceive Busan not merely as a place of study but as a meaningful living environment and emotional home. However, language barriers, experiences of othering, and institutional constraints were identified as obstacles to full integration.
The study suggests that volunteer participation plays an important role in fostering community adaptation, place attachment, and long-term settlement intentions among international students.
