ABSTRACT

A Study on Shimazaki Toson's "Tokkan" In the life of a writer Shimazaki Toson, three years of residence in France is a very important watershed events. "Bihuu" of the work of Toson is a very remarkable anthology for looking at the meaning of his visitation to France. This paper mainly investigated the meaning of the silence appeared in short "Tokkan" described at Toson's 4th collection of short stories "Bihuu". First, this paper, I have focused at the 'Labor' that being used in the "Tokkan". As a result, it was revealed that the 'Labor' acts as a driving force to move the inner of the main character. I think that the word 'labor' used in "Tokkan" have two sides. It says here that the two sides refer to a 'static' aspect refers to the creative aspects of the novel and the 'dynamic' aspect of the protagonist struggling to cover the publication costs. Secondly, this paper examined about the meaning of 'silence' of inside the hero and the 'shout' of outside world. As a consequence, it was investigated by the stylistic features of this work. Finally, by considering the meaning of the dotted line marks used in the prologue and epilogue of this novel, I have found that these formal features is how to connect with the inner world of the hero. In conclusion, It is the work that "Tokkan" is set in Japan for the Russo-Japanese War, well showing dual social and personal attention through the appearance of the hero breaking the hardships of life, planing to publish works.
