AB - A Study of the Multilingual Landscape in Osaka Nipponbashi Area : The Shop Signs Concerning Electrical and Electronic Appliances and The Distinctive Subculture
This research studied the linguistic landscape of Osaka Nipponbashi area, where many shops specializing in electrical and electronic appliances are present alongside a distinctive subculture. Nipponbashi is the largest electrical appliance district in Western Japan and has a distinct subculture. This research analyzed the multilingual and unique signage found in this area.
Not only are there standard multilingual landscapes which include “Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean,” but Thai and Vietnamese signs exist as well. In addition, this study found functions of intralinguistic variation by qualitative analysis. In other words, these variations can be classified into three categories “information about a shop, customer service and attention information”.
Moreover, we analyzed the typical shop signs in the Nipponbashi area. For example, picture 1 and 2 where hiragana is used to write words ordinarily are expressed in katakana. Deliberately choosing hiragana and the old form of the Chinese character to write words ordinarily written in katakana or numeric character provide a more informal impression and presents itself as more accessible. In addition, examples like picture 3 and 4 consists of social backgrounds about gender and secular variation.
We have reached the conclusion that these linguistic landscapes in the Osaka Nipponbashi area are similar to the Akihabara area, namely in multilingual and distinctive signage, and symbolic signs. Furthermore, we gave a full detail of functions of signs. Lastly, we hope to analyze other areas and thus contribute to the current research method.
