ABSTRACT

This study focused on the main female merchant who appears in Chapter 377 of Kokonjomonju and examined the Ukiyoe based on the female character Oiko, classified into three types. Type 1 focuses on the first half of the story in Chapter 377 and the characteristic of adding an erotic element to the image of the female merchant with superpowers, as told in the story. In other words, she creates the image of a great woman who possesses tremendous strength but is also very erotic. Type 2 draws mainly on the content of the latter part of the tale, breaking away from the erotic image emphasized in Type 1 to depict a proud female protagonist. Considering this, it can be said that the Type 2 Oiko best matches the image of Oiko originally handed down in the folk tales. Type 3 shows Oiko as the “virtuous mother and good wife” who makes rice balls in support of a man participating in a wrestling competition. This can be regarded as the result of the categorization of female characters attempted in Type 2 carried out in earnest. To point out the content of that categorization, we could describe the image of a woman as a “virtuous mother and good wife.”
