ABSTRACT

The examples of Muraji Ikago, Michizane Sugawarano, King Sato of Ryukyu, the wife of King Shoshin, the heavenly woman of Kubadonotake, Noro, and Utah verify the common narrative structure of marriage-birth-divinity. The ancestor-style story plays role in the solidarity of the community and the establishment of the transmission group identity. In addition, it is important for understanding Japanese folk culture and the identity of transmission groups. The study found that this type of narrative plays a key role in justifying the sacredization and transcendental genealogy of the sijo and is continuously reinterpreted in local faiths and transmission groups through literature and word-of-mouth. This contributes to related research by defining a new type of wingwear narrative called the “ancestor-type wingwear story” and identifying the rationale behind justifying the transcendent genealogy.
