AB - 런던 증권거래소의 역사는 금융허브 런던의 변천을 상징적으로 보여주고 있다. 파리와 암스테르담 증권거래소에 비해 런던 증권거래소는 뒤늦게 설립되었지만 유럽의 정정 불안 속에 런던은 유럽의 금융 중심지로 자리 잡을 수 있었다. 20세기 초 런던 증권거래소는 세계 50여개 증권거래소와 차익거래 네트워크를 형성할 정도로 위상이 높아졌지만 폐쇄적인 회원제와 규제체계로 인해 2차 세계대전 이후에는 과거의 위상을 되찾지 못하였다. 1986년 ‘Big Bang’ 개혁 이후 런던 증권거래소는 탈상호화를 거치며 글로벌 경쟁체제에 편입되었다. 비록 독일 거래소의 3차례에 걸린 합병 시도가 모두 무산되었으나 런던 증권거래소는 수차례의 M&A를 통해 대형화, 수직통합화, 대체거래시설과의 경쟁 대응, 정보서비스 강화의 변화된 거래소 산업 환경에 대응하여 왔다고 할 수 있다. 다만, 브렉시트로 조성된 불확실성은 런던 증권거래소에게 새로운 도전이 될 것이며 런던의 금융허브 지위에도 작지 않은 영향을 미칠 전망이다.
