ABSTRACT

The electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) over nickel-based catalysts is a pivotal route for sustainable biomass valorization. Unlike traditional reviews, this work innovatively integrates bibliometric analysis (1991–2025) with a critical assessment of catalyst science. We quantitatively map the field’s exponential growth, identifying key contributors and the strategic shift in research hotspots toward transition metal engineering. Furthermore, we systematically review technical advances in catalyst preparation, active site identification (specifically high-valent NiOOH), and reaction mechanisms (including the electrochemical-chemical mechanism). By combining data-driven insights with a deep analysis of in situ characterization and theoretical calculations, this review offers a novel, comprehensive perspective to guide the rational design of next-generation nickel electrocatalysts.
