ABSTRACT

This study examines the various types of polysemization at both the word and phrase levels. It investigates how polysemization occurs in polysemy, compounds, idiomatic phrases, and irony. New meanings are generated through a process of expansion and deepening from the most basic meaning. These new meanings can be categorized into individual, synonymic, and oppositive meanings. The mechanisms behind polysemization involve figurative speech techniques such as metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony. The cognitive semantic interpretation of polysemization is as follows: (1) It reveals a tendency to identify objects with similar characteristics or nature by using metaphors. (2) It illustrates a tendency to identify and express thoughts from similar situations that have been experienced in one situation. (3) The polysemization of rephrasing in peripheral meanings similar to the basic meanings indicates the spread of human cognitive structure from core to periphery. (4) It demonstrates an attitude of perceiving a situation as a whole through its representation. (5) Polysemization through the use of paradoxical irony highlights the emphasis on intended messages within human cognitive structures.
