ABSTRACT

Internal displacement (desplazamiento forzado interno) has been a prominent feature of violence in Colombia. However, there is not much literature on internal displacement. The novel La multitud errante (A Tale of the Dispossessed) by Laura Restrepo was one of the few works that dealt with internal displacement at the time of its publication. The situation has not changed much in the two decades. This article examines the relationship between migration, writing, and identity based on the fact that the contemporary postmodern world is characterized by nomadism, whether voluntary or forced. In other words, analyzing Laura Restrepo's La multutud errante, it dismantles the existing relationship between identity and home/family to reveal new forms of relationship and implied issues such as individuals and groups, violence, and peace. Although La multitud errante focused on the specific situation of internal displacement in Colombia, it also reflected the situation in Latin America. This shows that this novel is not only a story of internal displacement in Colombia and other Latin American countries, but also can be extended to the case of international displacement, that is, exiles, refugees, and migrants.
