ABSTRACT

This study investigated the phenomenon of /d/ deletion in the Spanish spoken in Cusco from the variationist sociolinguistic perspective. The weakening of /d/ between vowels in Spanish has been the subject of numerous studies from a sociolinguistic approach. However, research on this phenomenon in the Spanish of the Andean region is scarce. This study analyzed data collected through sociolinguistic interviews conducted with 24 local speakers in Cusco in July and August 2022. It examined cases where /d/ appeared in intervocalic position, at the beginning of words between vowels, as well as in contexts where it was preceded or followed by semivowels. This study analyzed the degree of deletion of this phoneme and linguistic and extralinguistic variables that influenced this deletion. Results show that in Cusco, /d/ deletion has spread even to word-initial positions. It also occurs when it is followed by a semivowel. Inferential statistical analysis was conducted using Goldvarb X and LVS, revealing that linguistic variables had a greater influence on the deletion of /d/ than social variables. Among social variables, the speaker’s gender and age were found to be significant factors. Some social variables were observed to interact with age variable.
