ABSTRACT

This study explores the lexical classification system of Hwahan Yeokeo (華漢譯語) by analyzing the semantic relationships between each category (leimu, 類目) and its associated headwords. The goal is to clarify the semantic attributes of these categories and the degrees of correspondence among them. While the categorical structure of Hwahan Yeokeo, known as the “Seog-○ (釋○)” type, was modeled after the nineteen sections of Erya (爾雅), it was expanded to sixty-five categories to accommodate the diversification of social domains and the linguistic realities of the Joseon period. This paper classifies the semantic relationships between each Category (類目) and its associated headwords according to hierarchical levels and examines their semantic correspondence. The findings reveal that most headwords correspond directly or indirectly to the semantic attributes of their assigned categories, although a small number show weak or subjective correspondence and may be better suited for reclassification under different categories. Overall, this investigation highlights the lexicographical significance of Hwahan Yeokeo and the intrinsic semantic characteristics of its categorical framework.
