ABSTRACT

This study examines how the 'Bogotazo,' a period of political violence in Colombia, is reinterpreted in Manuel Zapata Olivella's novel, La calle 10. While traditional historical accounts often view the Bogotazo as mere political unrest, this research emphasizes the author's narrative strategy, which brings to light the microhistories of individual lives and communities. In La calle 10, the social tensions and conflicts of 1940s Bogotá are vividly portrayed through the voices of marginalized people frequently omitted from official history. The author argues that the violence of the Bogotazo was not just a riot but a tragic consequence of the government's long-standing oppression and neglect of its citizens. Zapata Olivella serves as a spokesperson for those overlooked by power, delivering a compelling political message that seeks to remember Colombia's history of conflict and violence. Ultimately, this study aims to clarify the literary contributions of La calle 10 to the Colombian historical narrative, highlighting how the novel critiques state contradictions and underscores the importance of resistance and memory through the experiences of its peripheral characters.
