ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the influence of four major private libraries from the late Qing Dynasty—Tiejin Tongjian Lou, Haiyuan Ge, Bisong Lou, and Baqianjuan Lou—on the advancement of Chinese scholarship and culture. These libraries systematically collected and preserved rare books during a time of war and social upheaval, and their founders dedicated themselves to promoting knowledge dissemination and academic exchange. Driven by a mission beyond personal interests, they aimed to uphold academic traditions and share knowledge, significantly strengthening and sustaining regional scholarly practices. Tiejin Tongjian Lou served as a center for epigraphical studies and the preservation of rare books from the Song and Yuan periods. Haiyuan Ge was instrumental in maintaining and enhancing the academic traditions of Shandong. Bisong Lou made scholarly resources accessible through manuscript corrections and transcriptions, while Baqianjuan Lou addressed academic gaps by restoring lost texts, including volumes from the Siku Quanshu. This study underscores the contributions of these libraries to the development of academic discourse and knowledge networks of their time, offering insights into how traditional book preservation can foster modern academic research and knowledge systems.
