ABSTRACT

This article provides a comparative analysis of La dama boba by Lope de Vega and El vergonzoso en palacio by Tirso de Molina, examining how narratives of female marriage both reflect and reshape social values in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish society. Both plays feature a similar structure in which the heroine's desire for marriage conflicts with paternal authority; however, they present differing social perspectives in their treatment of this conflict and their conclusions. While La dama boba recognizes female agency, it ultimately integrates that agency into the existing patriarchal framework, thereby reaffirming established social values. In contrast, El vergonzoso en palacio challenges the legitimacy of social and marital norms tied to status, suggesting a reevaluation of prevailing conventions. Through this comparison, the article argues that narratives of female marriage serve not just as romantic plots but as key devices for expressing social values in Spanish Baroque drama.
