ABSTRACT

The objective of this research is to find ways to improve health and safety systems for firefighters through examining the distinctiveness of firefighters' work environment in South Korea and analyzing health and safety policies in several developed countries such as United States, England, and Japan. Firefighting is a dangerous field-based activity that includes risk of exposure to poisonous gas and severe injuries, which could be life-threatening. When the stress level of become high and chronic, firefighters could develop side effects such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and mental breakdown that tend to lead to alcoholic addition, heavy smoking, and even suicide. Thus, this research suggests new policies to build up safer environments where firefighters can develop a high sense of duty, along with the direction for further research.
