ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to give a systematic review of the effectiveness of batterer intervention programs (BIPs) in the Republic of Korea and to analyze the roles of service providers and government organizations in order to provide more evidence-based BIPs. The literature on the effectiveness of BIPs from 1998 (the year the domestic violence laws were passed) to 2017 was reviewed and 13 articles were selected for the systematic review according to the CONSORT2010 checklist. Results show that CBT is frequently utilized in BIPs and offenders are legally obligated to spend the required counseling hours within a given period of time. It is also found that most research designs were not able to build a control group. Discussions based on the review include the establishment of evidence-based BIPs and programs tailored to fit different sub-types of offenders.
