ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the elderly counselors’ experience in involvement with alcoholic elderly abuse cases at the elder protection agency. The data were collected over a period starting from October 2016 to January 2017. Focus group discussions were conducted with 21 elderly abuse counselors working at four elder protection agencies in Seoul and Kyounggi Province. The data were analyzed using the Giorgi’s phenomenological method. The data analysis results revealed 15 themes on situated structural descriptions(SSDs) including 4 main themes such as (1) the vicious cycle of drinking and elder abuse, (2) confrontation with alcoholic elderly abusers, (3) a growing burden of alcoholic elderly abusers, and (4) passive involvement with alcoholic elderly abusers. Considering the limited involvement of elderly abuse counselors at the elder protection agency with alcoholic elderly abusers, it is recommended to provide assistance in cooperation with local alcohol agencies.
