The conservatives in Korea, who met a crisis of losing their privilege after democratization in Korea, tried to expand conservatism and to organize NGOs. In these days they held big rallies and conducted extreme and violent performances. However, some of them showed a little changes and tried to be separated from ultra rightists. They may be called the conservative NGOs in that they do not want to be extremes and tried to accomodate themselves to changed reality.
Ideological difference between the conservative NGOs and the extreme rightist NGOs is not essential. Both of them emphasize liberal democracy, strengthening ROK-US alliance, sending Korean troops to Iraq, Criticizing North Korea, protecting free market, and opposing to repealing National Security Law, to equalizing high schools and to moving administrative capital. The conservative NGOs, however, wants to look different from the extreme rightist NGOs and tries to be separated from them. The conservatives recognized that Korean society has changed since democratization in Korea and post-Cold War period. Therefore they don't think that they must continuously oppose to the democratic force. Rather, they accent integrated society, economic aid to North Korea, and even abolition of patriarchic laws. They also try to seek coexistence with present government. Their ideology is thought to be practical and nationalistic, but seems to be in confusion. In addition, they may join extreme rights again whenever the rights gain power. Therefore continuous democratization and reforms are needed in Korea in order for them to keep on improving themselves.
