ABSTRACT

This research is to study conceptual and theoretical perspectives of consumer movements. Based on broad understanding the conceptual and theoretical perspectives, this research is to review developmental processes of the Korean consumer movement in order to recognize its identity and characteristic. In addition, this research is to share the importance and value of consumer movements with scholars, students, and advocates. To achieve these objectives of the research, this paper consist of two parts. The first part includes definitions and goals, concepts, theories, and origins of consumer movements. The second part contains development processes of the Korean consumer movement. In particular, this part tries to recognize its developmental processes as a civil social movement. Reviewing activities of consumer movement organizations, the development processes of the Korean consumer movement are divided into three stages: beginning, growth and progress. Three aspects were used in division of the developmental stages: changes of consumer issues following social and economic changes, legislative changes of consumer protection, internal changes of consumer movements including leading organizations and leadership.
