ABSTRACT

The guiding research question of this study is to discover how British state-society relations to shift since the 1980s. Basically British society has been characterised by a traditional soft state in which societal groups have exercised strong autonomy against the British government. However, as a neo-liberal economic model has been adopted since the 1980s, the British government has shifted to a strong regulatory state. Despite this challenge, it is possible to observe to some extent inertia driven by markets in British society.
