ABSTRACT

This study is a research on the effects of students’ volunteer activities on their democratic civil consciousness by considering their academic environment. This research is based on the survey of the students of Kwang Myoung High School, in May 2009. Its primary analysis is as follows. First, the higher the motivation for promoting the development of a local community, the higher the awareness of civil consciousness. On the other hand, the higher the external motivation from the external influence, the lower the possibility of making reasonable decisions. Leisure motivation also has positive effects on civil consciousness. Secondly, the evaluation of the effect of students’ maturity on their career on their awareness as a citizen reveals that the maturer negotiability of their career as students, the higher their consciousness as a citizen. Third, the analysis of the impact of students’ academic stress on their civil awareness reveals that the higher their stress from daily assignment and private institutes, the lower their awareness as democratic citizens.
