ABSTRACT

What are the success factors for civic crowdfunding? Civic crowdfunding is a subtype of crowdfunding in which non-profit organizations raise funds for public interests. It is executed through an online crowdfunding platform where any individuals can have access. While prior research on crowdfunding exists mostly from a perspective of commercial value and corporate marketing strategies, studies on civic crowdfunding are very limited. Therefore, this research analyzes the use of civic crowdfunding and its success factors. It searches for the success factors of civic crowdfunding from the projects conducted through Wadiz, the largest online crowdfunding platform in Korea. As a result, the successful outcome of a civic crowdfunding project depends on 1)whether there is a delivery of factual information within the digital visual content in the funding promotion story and 2)whether or not there is an interactive communication between the individual(potential donor) and the funding promotor. Interestingly, such results are somewhat different from the success factors of corporate digital promotion and marketing strategy, which suggest the need for independent research on civic crowdfunding and its strategy.
