ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore organizational experiences according to the sector (non-profit, for-profit, public) and the path (internal promotion, external recruitment) of the top managers of non-profit organizations.. It is qualitative study interviewing 11 top managers from 10 organizations, and the result were analyzed at the personal, organizational, and management levels. First, non-profit organizations have difficulty appointing and maintaining top managers. Second, the experience and limitations between for-profit sector experiences recruited from outside and non-profit experiences promoted internally were different. Finally, it is found that both internal promotion, external recruitment, and for-profit experienced, non-profit experienced top managers play the role of a top manager in the absence of sufficient education, learning, and experience in "non-profit management." Through the results of this study, if they can anticipate or prevent difficulties in advance, it will have implications for lowering the turnover rate and reducing the financial and non-financial costs of replacing non-profit executives. Furthermore, it can be the basis for presenting the competencies and leadership of the top managers of non-profit organizations that are distinguished from companies.
