ABSTRACT

“The Images of Heavenly Horse and Blood-sweating Horse Shown in Ancient Chinese Texts”In ancient China, the appearance of horse was intrinsically associated with rivers and dragons. The horse had spirituality no less than practicality. The notion that the horse appeared in river did not come from the Chinese tradition but foreign. In the same manner, the horse that ancient chinese were anxious to possess was brought from the northern west of China, Central Asia and/or Miner Asia. It was necessary for the chinese to select the best one among foreign horses, therefore a certain criterion was needed. It was the Heavenly Horse 天馬, “Blood-sweating horse 汗血馬” originating in an area in Central Asia. In my studies, I tried to find how the “Blood-sweating Horse” was connected with “Heavenly Horse 神馬” and how its characteristics and figures were represented in ancient chinese texts.
