AB - The crow terrace poetry case is both a name of an incident and also a name of a book. The crow terrace poetry case as an incident refers to a sudden arrestment of Su Shi by the Censor for writing poems against the government after he was assigned to Hu-chou(湖州) in the year of 1079. And as a book the crow terrace poetry case consists of government documents such as accusation documents made by the administrators and also the statements by Su Shi about the poem in question which eventually gets published and distributed. The crow terrace poetry case is the first case of ‘literary persecution’ and also a rare case in the aspect that the records of the incident gets to be published and distributed.
This thesis handles a few questions which was unanswered by the past studies on the crow terrace poetry case. A poem related 'literary persecution' is inevitable in the history of poems. This incident happened in a few traditional Chinese literature backgrounds. Firstly, a poet had to express his or her political views, position and purpose by their poems. Secondly, it became a common poetry style in the Song dynasty period where as a poem became an everyday life literature and in reality an everyday life relations lead to a creation of a poetry. And lastly, the fact that the publishing market was growing worked as another factor of this incident.
The official documents related to this incident finally gets published. This was the result and also the reflection of curiosity of the people on this matter. And while reading this publishment I assume that many poets self eliminated and self censored their own poetries and also watched themselves of what they say and what they do. These outcomes not only limits the incident as Su Shi's private matter but also had an effect to the creative minds for those who were living at that period.
