ABSTRACT

In the ancient China, the discussion about death and mourning began at quite early period. But it is something lacking in the point of people's attention, due to the influence of confucian ideology, not mentioning in direct way. Although numerous mourning works have been created in various ways over a long period of time, its developmental history has been neglected by the emphasis on practicality and social custom. Thus the research purpose of this paper stems from these reasons. The process of change in the structure of feelings shown in the mourning works of Han wei and six dynasties(漢魏六朝) can be categorized as following. The first phase is its weakness in the point of public function. Considering the early mourning works, only public figures were shown as the objects of mourning under the banner of confucian ideology. But, in the case of the Wei jin nan bei chao period, the mourning works began to appear in the personal realm also. The second phase is in the emphasis on individual identity. Although re-emphasizing certain norms in their creation. Wei jin nan bei chao dynasties has shown the author's subjectivity in the content and expression of those works. The third phase is the diversification in the concept of death and mourning. In the case of the previous periods of Han dynasty, the theme of death and mourning had been discussed in the perspective of public benefit for eternal honor. But, the efforts diversifying the theme of mourning and recognizing the death in the viewpoint of the living people had been initiated. In conclusion, it was discovered that the mourning works in the Han wei and six dynasties also showed the field of constant change, not sticking to the two points of practicality and social custom.
