AB - Among Tang dynasty Buddhist monks, Guanxiu(Buddhist title is Chanyue禪月) is the only monk who made a reputation for poetry and also made a name for calligraphy, especially for monk poet and monk calligrapher. Guanxiu is famous for both monk poet and monk calligrapher, and has the most unusual aspect in that he is creating calligraphy poems that sings the calligraphy of another buddhist monk calligrapher as well as poems that others praised. Therefore, in this paper, I would like to consider the calligraphy poetry recited by Guanxiu among Tang dynasty calligraphy poems, poems of Tang dynasty that evaluated Guanxiu's calligraphy, and subsequent evaluations of Guanxiu's calligraphy.
Since Guanxiu's authentic calligraphy works are not present, this paper aims to make the poems in which Guanxiu's calligraphy poems and Tang Dyasty poets sang at least one verse of Guanxiu's calligraphy as the primary research subject. Among the 720 poems of Guanxiu, a total of four poems related to calligraphy are handed down. Tang Dynasty poets mentioned Guanxiu's calligraphy at least one verse, six numbers were found. Summarizing the evaluations of various critics since the Song Dynasty, it can be seen that Guanxiu's The Cursive script is far below Huaisu(懷素), and sometimes less than Gaoxian(高閑) or Bianguang(䛒光), or more positively, it is evaluated as a level that reaches the level of Yaqi(亞棲). Therefore, if you look at the Tang Dynasty's The Cursive script monk calligrapher, Guanxiu's The Cursive script did not reach the top ranks like Huaisu's calligraphy, and fell short of Gaoxian or Bianguang's, or similar to Yaqi's, it can be evaluated as one of the five best of the time. Guanxiu's handwriting was both bizarre and unique, with cursive characters that were even more exceptional.
