ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the function of counter-expectation markup and emphasis markup of “ben lai(本来)” and its grammaticalisation path. “ben lai(本来)1” is a time adverb with the discourse structure of “ben lai(本来)1+S1 (E), (CE) +S2”. It expresses procedural meaning and has the pragmatic function of predicting the forthcoming counter- expectation information in the following context, reflecting the subjectivity of language. “ben lai(本来)2” is a commentary adverb, and the structure of the discourse is “ben lai(本来)2+S”, which has the pragmatic function of emphasising the fact of the stated content and enhancing the rationality of the argument, and has different psychological intentions in different contexts, due to different reasons for producing the emphasis effect, reflecting the interactive subjectivity of language. In addition, this paper also found that “ben lai(本来)” experienced the grammaticalisation path of intra-sentence predicate adverbs > sentence adverbs > discourse markers.
