AB - “The Long Night(長夜)” is based on 100 days of actual experiences after writer Yao XueYin(姚雪垠), who was 14 years old at the time, was taken hostage by bandits in the winter of 1924. In the special status of being a hostage and adopted child, Ju Sheng (菊生) encounters a wide range of bandits, young people who want to be bandits, rural landowners, residents, troops, and secret associations, and sees the rise and fall of the bandits located in rural areas on the western corner of Henan Province. “The Long Night” shows the bandit life of murder, arson, looting, and rape from the perspective of a boy, but at the same time reveals the gloomy inner side of those who had no choice but to become bandits in the despair of poverty and inequality.
Most of the characters in the novel are real characters and the place names are also real, and most of the circumstances in which the incident occurs are consistent with the actual situation. Therefore, it can be said that “The Long Night” has great anthropological and sociological values, as well as literary values, dealing with the survival patterns of Chinese farmers in the early 20th century.
The main character, Ju Sheng, faces the deep depression in the lives of bandits who had no other choice and recognizes China's history as a history of ‘殺’ written with the blood and tears of countless weak people. This clearly means that JuSheng's perspective goes beyond simple experience and is with anthropological concerns about the original state of human history. JuSheng is approaching questions about human nature while keeping his eye on Chinese farmers in a terrible growing pain.
