ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively examine the extent to which the language of Chinese leaders reflects their respective historical contexts by analyzing the New Year's addresses delivered by Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Xi Jinping from 1993 to 2022. To this end, the study performs a comprehensive linguistic analysis of thirty years of speeches, utilizing word frequency and Type-Token Ratio (TTR) analysis, TF- IDF-based keyword extraction, and era-specific keyword association analysis. The results, grounded in TTR and TF-IDF metrics, suggest that while Jiang and Hu tended to exhibit a conventional linguistic pattern characterized by repetition and formality, Xi appears to have adopted a more diverse and differentiated linguistic strategy. Furthermore, regarding era-specific keywords, the analysis indicates a shift in priorities: Jiang placed a relatively higher emphasis on elevating China's international status, Hu focused more on livelihood improvements for social harmony, while Xi seems to have prioritized political values to advance socialism with Chinese characteristics.
