ABSTRACT

This study compares Creation of the Gods Ⅱ: Demon Force and Ne Zha Ⅱ to examine narrative strategies of reimagining in contemporary Chinese mythological cinema. Using Vogler’s hero’s journey, Propp’s narrative functions, cultural semiotics, and sentiment analysis of Douban reviews, it constructs a ‘narrative–sign–reception’ framework. The analysis shows that Creation of the Gods Ⅱ develops a multi-linear epic narrative centered on collective heroes and political order, emphasizing historical legitimacy and cultural continuity, whereas Ne Zha Ⅱ adopts a single- linear growth narrative focused on individual experience, self-redemption, and resistance to fate, highlighting modern subjectivity. The two films also differ in semiotic transformation: the former reconstructs myth as historical epic through archaeological visuality and hierarchical space, while the latter deconstructs mythological authority through humor, youth-oriented sensibility, and digital animation. The study concludes that contemporary Chinese mythological cinema both inherits and creatively transforms traditional cultural resources through modern narrative, visual symbols, and industrial reception mechanisms.
