A Generative AI-Supported Instructional Model for College Travel Chinese Based on Learner Experience and Needs

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the learning experiences and needs of learners in a university general education Travel Chinese course and to design a generative AI-supported instructional model based on the findings. To this end, a survey on post-course perceptions and needs was conducted among students enrolled in a Travel Chinese course at University A in the spring semester of 2026, and 44 valid responses were analyzed. The results showed that learners generally considered the unit sequence aligned with travel stages and the two-hour-per-week, face-to-face format appropriate; they also expressed a need for greater emphasis on speaking and listening. Although the practicality of the course content and the authenticity of the scenarios addressed in class were rated highly, learners' confidence in handling unexpected situations and performing travel-related tasks independently was relatively low. Accordingly, a 12-unit instructional model was proposed that retains face-to-face instruction while integrating individualized practice with generative AI, differentiated scaffolding, feedback-informed task repetition, and real-world interaction. This study is significant in that it positions generative AI as a pedagogical tool to supplement individual speaking opportunities and repeated task performance in large, mixed-proficiency classes.
