AB - This study investigated the mediation effect of self-compassion and avoidant/distractive regulation style on the relationship between depression and procrastination. A total of 329 Korean undergraduate and graduate students(153 men, 176 women) participated in the study. Students completed the Aitken Procrastination Inventory, CES-D, Emotion Regulation Checklist, and the Korean version of the Self-Compassion Scale. SPSS 18.0 and Mplus 6.0 programs were used for the statistical analysis. Structural equation models(SEM) were used with data in order to test the validity research model, and multigroup analyses were performed for investigations into the differences in the interest models by gender. The results were as follows. First, depression was positively correlated with procrastination, and avoidant/distractive regulation style was positively correlated with depression and procrastination. However, self-compassion was negatively correlated with depression and procrastination. Second, there were significant differences by gender in the mean scores of procrastination and self-compassion and model fits. Third, Avoidant/distractive regulation style and Self-compassion partially mediated the relationship between depression and procrastination. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study and future research directions were discussed.
