ABSTRACT

Scholars says about Mass-Popular Culture Age characteristic in these times. And there are so many argues and discusses about popular culture movement. This paper also a study on that subject. But its base is different: Christian ethical view, especially Augustinian perspective. As H. R. Niebuhr says, Augustinian view is an alternative in Christ and Culture. But this paper argues Niebuhr's interpretation on Augustine has something wrong or short points. Augustine thought that culture in popular context must not to be not transformed as Niebuhr but criticized from the view of civitas Dei. Culture has some merits in aspects of humanity and morality. But it is not perfect. The only genuine perfection will be achieved in civitas Dei. In this meaning, Augustine's view is not unfulfilled as Niebuhr's view but realistic and dialectic to popular culture in his times in this paper's view. Now, conclusion and proposal of this paper could be summarized as these: (1)Christian ethics must try to develop more wide and realistic view besides Niebuhr's theory. (2)Christian ethics must do its unique concern about desirable alternative in popular culture.
