ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to inquire into the ethical perception of Huldrych Zwingli utilizing the view point of Iris Marion Young regarding the political responsibility for Justice. In order to make a kind of dialogue between Iris M. Young and Huldrych Zwingli the author has focused on the social ethic for political responsibility and the goodness of community which have common grounds. The reason why this kind of comparison is possible between a Swiss reformer of the 16th century and a US American female scholar of the 21st century is that they share a common interest regarding the consciousness of justice and social political responsibility. This article is composed by two major parts: firstly, it introduces the perception of I. M. Young regarding five faces of oppression and H. Zwingli regarding oppression and justice. Young considers not only the injustice of distribution, but also the whole complexity of oppression and injustice. Secondly, it deals with issues of social structure, justice, sin and responsibility regarding mercenaries, the incident of breaking the fast by Zwingli and the frame of oppression of Young. Her approach corrects male dominant understanding of discourse about justice and includes the aspect of gender for examining injustice in society. This is her achievement of seeking social justice in a democratic government. The efforts of Zwingli who sought justice and public responsibility resulted not only in an idealistic theory, but also brought about the example of transformation for Swiss society through reformation. Thus it can offer useful clues for correcting and overcoming flaws in Young’s theory. Her option of and ideal City Life has certain limitations for application to reality. Even though the article concludes with a short critical comments including Zwingli’s point of view and the contemporary global problem of urbanization, it requires further research in order to provide an optional solution.
