The disaster of Sewol ferry was a tragedy that happened due to the lack of empathy about human life and safety. The hard-heartedness of disaster capitalism came to the front through the catastrophe of Sewol ferry. Empathy is the ability to identify what someone else is thinking or feeling and to respond to their thoughts and feelings with appropriate emotion. Empathy is to prevent both sides’s conflicts and to restore divided relationship. Empathy gives the deep meaning of our lives and drives radical change of our society. According to Nussbaum, empathy has three cognitive elements. The first cognitive element is an appraisal of the severity of other person’s misfortune. The second cognitive requirement is a belief the person’s suffering is unmerited. The third is the eudaimonistic judgement, that is we recognize the fact that we are also exposed by the same misfortunes and sufferings. The Sewol ferry disaster gives us heavy assignment to change thoroughly the structural contradiction of our society. The church emphasize with the sufferings and must participate in the improving the social structures to avoid the disaster such as the Sewol ferry accident.
