ABSTRACT

The topic of “Modern Transition and Christianity” is still a hot potato in Korean society. This is because it was a central theme in the controversy surrounding the “Government Designed Textbooks” a few years ago, which raised fundamental questions about how we define and understand our modern transition. This study represents the first step in attempting to unravel the theme of “Christianity” within the context of the “Modern Enlightenment Periodical.” The subjects of this study include some individuals and articles related to Christianity from publications such as “THE CHOSUN(大朝鮮獨立協會會報 The Journal of the Great Korean Independence Association,),” “Taegeukhakbo(太極學報) The Journal of the Taeguk Society,” “Seou(西友),” “ Choyangbo(朝陽報),”and “Sonyon Hanbando (少年韓半島).” Additionally, it encompasses the personal networks among individuals who converted to Christianity while imprisoned in Hanseong Prison from 1899 to 1904 and the connections between them and Japanese students studying abroad, who indirectly influenced the publication of enlightenment periodicals.
