ABSTRACT

This article examines how a political theological response can address the project of genetic enhancement, which involves the parents’ rights for procreation according to their concept of good life, the child’s autonomy of life, and the government’s authority for intervention according to the general concepts of good. Whereas Agar’s project of liberal eugenics suggests the priority of the parents’ procreative rights for enhancement according to their concept of good life, Fox and Dekker’s revision calls for the liberal government’s intervention for guaranteeing hypothetically agreeable general goods to enhance the child’s autonomy. In response to liberal eugenics and its revisions, a political theological response affirms the priority of therapy and promotes the equality of the child’s autonomy according to the general concepts of good life, while leading the government’s intervention and the general public through its cultural influence on civil society.
