ABSTRACT

When author ‘Lee ban’ wrote <Traces and Targets: Counterpoint>, the world was in a new state of chaos. Terrorism and war were occurring everywhere. Although Christianity had been around for over 2,000 years, the world still seemed to be in the midst of rampant evil. In this work, ‘Lee ban’ reinterprets the Christian faith, asking what we believe in in these times. <Counterpoint> was written by author ‘Lee ban’ in 2004 and performed by the theater company ‘Yemaek’ in 2005, and can be said to be a work with a clear religious intention. This work is in the form of a worship play using a chorus and deals with the essential and ultimate issues of Christian faith based on historical evidence. In the play <Counterpoint>, the author clearly depicts the death of Crown Prince Sohyeon as the first martyrdom in Korea. He actively accepted Christianity and actively contemplated his faith. Furthermore, the author says that he boldly walked the path of martyrdom, which has been believed to be the best form of life for a disciple who follows Christ. In <Counterpoint>, the writer ‘Lee ban’ clearly conveys this point. Through this play, he talks about human time, which is parallel to God’s time in contradistinction, and about faith that brings together two parallel lines that seem like they will never meet.
