ABSTRACT

This article examines the criticism that Korean Christianity, despite its strong Calvinist influence, lacks social spirituality — characterized by responsibility, communication, empathy, and hospitality — and seeks guidance from Calvin himself on this matter. Calvin emphasizes the restoration of ‘social spirituality based on discipleship,’ which is fundamentally rooted in union with Christ and the imitation of Him. Calvin’s perspective effectively reinterprets Luther’s concept of discipleship within a civic context, achieving a ‘civic spirituality’ that reflects the Reformation’s nature as an urban phenomenon in Geneva. Moreover, Calvin’s understanding of social spirituality aligns with Stanley Hauerwas’ interpretation of ‘sanctification’ as the development of Christian character. Korean Christianity, with its emphasis on discipleship training, is encouraged to give greater attention to social spirituality and actively work toward embodying its virtues in contemporary society.
