ABSTRACT

The escalating ecological threats and social imbalances necessitate a comprehensive response from theological and ethical perspectives, as warned by the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report. This study attempts to redefine the essential significance and theological mandate of the church in the transformative context of the ‘New Normal’ era, focusing on the concept of the ecologically oriented church. Based on Chun-Gye Lee Jong-seong’s public ecclesiology and holistic theological methodology, this paper explores the church’s renewed identity and practical strategies from an eco-ethical viewpoint under the redemptive horizon of church universality. Specifically, by re-examining Agamben’s theory of biopolitics as an analytical framework from a political theological perspective, the study critically analyzes the reality in which not only human lives but also the entire natural ecosystem are reduced to ‘Bare Life’ under mechanisms of power and control. Based on this analysis, it asserts that the church must fulfill its communal vocation to safeguard and restore God’s creation order, and its duty must be carried out through concrete actions, securing ‘ecological sovereignty’ legally and institutionally as the ultimate practice of stewardship. Through interdisciplinary exploration connecting theology, eco-ethics, and political theology, this research aims to contribute to the deepening of Christian eco-ethical discussions by providing a theological foundation and ethical guidelines for the Korean church to become an ecologically oriented public church that meets the demands of the times.
