AB - This paper aims to explore the normative identity of Christian ethics by examining the Sermon on the Mount. Sermon on the Mount presents the love of enemies and the Golden Rule as core norms of Christian ethics. The study reveals the following normative differences and characteristics distinguishing Christian Ethics from other ethical systems: First, Christian ethics grounds its ultimate authority in the Bible not in reason, experience and tradition. However, To read the Bible in an ethically sound manner, one must approach it not as a set of rules, but as a foundation of moral principles and imagination.
Second, Agape-the core norm of Christian ethics — should be understood not merely as one norm among many, but as a ‘fundamental’ or ‘meta’ norm that evaluates and critiques other norms. Christian love is characterized by a dynamic interconnectedness in which the love of God, the love of neighbor, and the love of self are mutually implicated.
Third, the normative characteristics of Christian love are manifested in the ‘excellence of loving one’s enemies’ and the ‘universality of the Golden Rule’. Love of enemies envisions the perfection of God transcendshuman rationality, providing the motivation for moral integrity and the social imagination. Meanwhile, the Golden Rule establishes the normative foundation for a universal ethic essential to the global ethos facing a crisis.
