Recently, the discourse of the 4th industrial revolution, which is rapidly spreading, has led to the importance of collaborative ability based on self-directed learning and digital literacy ability. There is a criticism that science liberal education in the domestic universities still give one-way lecture or a way of incorporating lectures and discussions, which does not contribute to the enhancement of the qualities required for the 4th Industrial Revolution despite these changes in the environment. In this study, the current state of science liberal education in Korea and the United States, the teaching methodology discussed in the US and the cases of applying new teaching methods are summarized. On the basis of it, several suggestions for improvement is to be made as follows. First, students should be taught science through self-directed experiences by using project models or by participating students in local service project models. Second, it is necessary to consider introducing a multi-dimensional evaluation system, and absolute one rather than a relative evaluation system in order to motivate students participating in student-led learning. Third, there is a need to try multi-disciplinary subjects. For this, the support of universities should be expanded, and completion duty for the science liberal arts normally fixed to 3 credits should be adjust autonomically. Fourth, teachers is to be provided pedagogical training courses.

The book called “Vision and Change”, which encompasses total issues on undergraduate education of biology in US, suggests six core competency to be developed through biology education. This study was performed to make class content aimed to raise competency on biology in societal context, that is, one of the six competency. We chose Mendelian genetics as a subject of class material and focused our work on Law of segregation. Scientific significance of Mendelian genetics can be summarized in three aspects. Firstly, Mendelian genetics sets good examples in scientific approaches such as cross methods for experiments, interpretation of data, and modeling of laws. Secondly, Mendelian genetics contributed in establishment and advancement of genetics by suggesting that genes are real, defining dominance and recessiveness, and revelation of importance of probability in genetics. Thirdly, the genetics aids biology by endowing importance to meiosis in a genetic sense and offering a firm basis to Darwinism. Social impacts of Mendelian genetics are as follows. Based on that genes are particulate, the genetics plays several roles in beat of bogus narratives and Lysenko genetics and providing a sound foundation for nature or nurture debate. Based on probability of law of segregation, Mendelian genetics offered preparation of a measure to genetic disorders on an individual and social basis, and presented logical backgrounds for incest taboo and animal family tree. Based on building of concept for dominance and recessiveness, the genetics contributed in right understanding of public on dominance and breaking down eugenics. For further works, the class contents should be updated ceaselessly reflecting rapid progress in biology field. In addition, discussion is needed on what kind of course is available for application of this class content. Further, feedback methods should be prepared when the course is performed.

It has been actively discussed the role of the BSM (Basic science mathematics) as a liberal arts foundation. The module system is an attempt at the fundamental convergence that can be made within actual curriculum for elevating the level of scientific literacy and liberal arts through basic chemistry class for humanities students based on module system. In this study, we have suggested the two module modules, A and B. Module A is composed of lecture, experiment and science writing. Especially, science writing in module A contains traditional experimental report section and intensified consideration section. The organic connection of each components which have relevant to subject helps to experience the effect of convergence in general chemistry class. We have expected that this module has improved the academic achievement and interest in general chemistry class. The module B is made up of lecture, team based online discussion, off line debate on the social impact of science (technology) and making the report. The purpose of this module (B) was to attempt to improvement in critical and logical thinking ability and communication skills. We have shown the example case of class through the convergence of the science and the humanities. This research suggests a way of establishing practical convergence education in basic chemistry for undergraduate students majoring humanities using module system. In the future, it will help designing the various BSM class for consideration students' major and academic ability.
