AB - This study aims to analyze the effect of the debate theme in the speaking ability of the university students and to investigate the desirable evaluation methods for the debate.
The debate is the educational speaking activity to interact the students each other that criticizes, accepts, and interacts on the othersʹ opinions. This starts from the premise that mutual interaction among the students in the class can affect the capability to acquire the language significantly. Most of the communication in the class is the interaction between the lecturers and the students, therefore, it becomes more important to prioritize the debate class in the university education.
The language learning in Structuralism or Cognition has been proposed to start from the learning the external forms of language data or teachersʹ initiations. However, the negotiation of the meaning has been emphasized by mutual interaction in the language learning in the interaction theory. Speaking and listening have been proposed not by general methods that the students simply acquire the language but by social interaction in this study.
The debate based on this interaction theory has been established from the defining the debate themes upon the development and interest levels of the students so that they could get more information than the lecturerʹs feedback, moreover, improve the learning attitude in terms of definition area. In addition, responding to the peerʹs speech, they could acquire the important technique of speaking and listening to find and amend their errors at the same time. In case of feedback only from the lecturer, it may generate the problem to receive the feedback without any criticism, however, the interaction with peers has the benefit to receive the feedback selectively in view of the same position. Despite the positive aspect of the debate class in the university education, it requires the acceptances and applications of a variety of evaluation methods, hence, they should be reviewed focusing on the debate cases.
