ABSTRACT

If one of the main purposes of outstanding individuals in the future is a well-cultured character, education of humanism is more important than anything else. Also, character as the core of education of humanism is important, because character is closely related to action. Character which can affect not only personal cultivation but also a consideration for others reflects the goal of education of humanism. In this respect, we need to focus on Utilitarianism, especially John Stuart Mill’s argument about the development of character. According to Mill, the development of character means moral character and the development of a way that can expand social utility through it. The study will discuss the education of humanism in terms of utilitarianism. In particular, this study contributes to providing the foundation of personality education in General education by carefully examining the concept of character and the importance of character development as written by John Stuart Mill.
