ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to suggest the right direction in the study of Korean as general education language after examining trends in studies on Korean as general education language. To this end, a total of 348 academic journals published from 2000 to 2019 were extracted, they were analyzed as by years, learner characteristics, language functions, language elements, and topics'. As a result, the studies on Korean as general education steadily increased from 2010, but it was found that many did not clarify the learner characteristics. In addition, much research focused on writing as a function and an educational method by topics. The results showed that a limited number of topics were only addressed. Therefore, this study suggested future research on more detailed investigation of foreign students who come to learn Korean and textbook specialized in teaching Korean, curriculum, textbook development. The implication of the study urges the need for research on professional instructors who could teach them.
