ABSTRACT

This study specifically confirmed the way in which the speculative expression ‘-neun geo gatda’ is expressed in texts where the genre characteristic of self-portrait essay is prominent. As a result of analyzing the use pattern of ‘-neun geo gatda’ for the writing assignments of first-year college students, there are two types: 'high certainty judgment on one's own experiences and thoughts' and ‘reflective judgment on one's own feelings and thoughts’. In the genre of self-portrait essays, the use of ‘-neun geo gatda’ in this sense can be explained by the author's ‘self-objectification strategy’. In a self-portrait essay, the ‘self-objectification strategy’ is primarily a mechanism for the writer to reflect on himself and interpret him/her with a typified look, and secondly, it is a mitigation mechanism applied by the reader to be empathized. This study can be found to be meaningful in that it embodied the meaning function of ‘-neun geo gatda’ in a specific genre called self-portrait essay.
