ABSTRACT

This paper examines hate speech, its countermeasures in the media, and proposes their use in liberal arts education. Hate speech in the media for the past three years can be classified into expressions related to women, race, LGBT people, disabled people, and region(non-Seoul/Non-Young Nam) according to the target. Examples, alternative expressions, and counter-expressions were proposed. Hate speech both reported and produced by the media was represented, but the latter was deemed more problematic and thus given more attention. Alternative expressions included those dealt by the media or suggested by researchers, and counter expressions were selected from cases in the media. Considering that the actual use of counter-expressions is necessary for the responses to be meaningful, a method of application in liberal arts education was also proposed. Lectures were planned focusing on hate speech and counter-expressions, as an advanced counterpart to basic writing and speech courses, under the name “A Language of Equality”. It is believed that through this lecture, students can change the language of prejudice into a language of equality.
